Katrina Messenger toys with the idea that perhaps there's too much sexual metaphor in the western magical tradition and wonders "what would have happened if the reigning metaphor had been birth instead of copulation" in her post, "Cosmologies: Sex versus Birth."
Medusa Coils poses the question (Is it really an opposition?)
I suppose that the "question" was really a statement suggesting there is no "opposition".
But I think that in this culture there is "opposition". There is such an overwhelming message in our culture that sex is (or should be) disconnected from birth. While fertile women are held up as the cultural object for consumption, there seems to be no conscious connection that fertility has anything to do with the creation of life (as-in where there is little mention of birth control (or births) in movies - but lots of sex).
The "western magical tradition" will be considered in reference to how it is more or less like the larger culture surrounding it. If the "western magical tradition" seems to advocate indiscriminate sex - it sounds little different from what has become the mainstream hedonistic (but still patriarachal) frame of this culture.
While those within the circle may assume that anyone would understand the differences (in POVs) - those who read snips and pieces of the reigning "sexual metaphor" may see more of the similarities - between that and the modern (sexually) libertarian lifestyle - where women and birth are not honored nor especially respected.
While both frames are at odds with the standard Christian POV (and some may enjoy that commonality) - the frames may still be at odds with each other - if one is about diminishing women (and trashing the world) and the other about women rising (and the glorification and protection of life on the planet).
